Australian tennis world number one Ashleigh Barty won her first title on Saturday at the Australian Open, at the expense of American Daniel Collins 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
After winning the first set, Barty was on course to lose the second set after the 30th-seeded sweeping Collins led to a 5-1 victory.
But Barty's ferocity brought her back to the air, and the set closed with a tiebreaker, match and lap.
"As an Australian, the most important thing is to be able to share this with people," Barty said at the Australian Open, after becoming the first domestic champion in 44 years. It's a great crowd and it made me do my best in tennis against a champion like Danielle. It's a dream come true and I'm very proud to be Australian."
Barty crowns historic Australian Open title Referring to her team that includes her parents, sister and husband, she commented: "The last few years have been very difficult for everyone. This tournament is one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. I am very grateful to have such great love by my side."
Danielle Collins, who lost her first Grand Slam final, praised the "variety of play" Barty hoped for, which she hoped to reach one day. I hope I can do it someday. I've had a great couple of weeks here, living the dream."
